Name
Historic Structure Reports as Creative Tools for Education and Preservation
Date & Time
Thursday, September 18, 2025, 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM
Description

This session will present three case studies of buildings of the recent past designed by noted African American architects: the Watts Happening Cultural Center (1970) and Carson City Hall (1976), both designed by Los Angeles architect Robert Kennard and located in Southern California, and Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church (1974), designed by Milwaukee's first registered Black architect Alonzo Robinson, Jr. The case studies will be used to demonstrate the different ways in which a historic structure report can be employed to not only guide the future rehabilitation and maintenance of a building, but also serve as an educational tool for community engagement and owner stewardship.
