While creating environmentally sustainable, climate smart land management plans can be difficult in any landscape, the challenges are especially acute in those where tradition, history, and Historic Place or National Landmark designation can be barriers to the adoption of newer, more responsible ideas in horticulture, grounds, and land management.

This session will explore the work of leaders in historic landscapes and sustainable practices.

Suzanne Clary, President and Interim Executive Director of the Jay Heritage Center; Baty Landis, Executive Director at Longue Vue; and Toshi Yano, Director of Perfect Earth Project, and Landscape and Garden Advisor at Wethersfield Estate & Garden, will discuss the tensions between traditional and contemporary land management practices, the challenges and opportunities that exist in sustainable approaches to historical interpretation, and the rewards of successfully implementing new ecological ideas in historic landscapes.
