Renovation of our historic theaters allows us to gather in public places that honor our past. Hear from leaders in the field who are renewing the physical fabric of these special places and bridging gaps in a city with racially divided neighborhoods.Built in 1927, Milwaukee’s landmark Oriental Theatre has retained its original opulence while evolving into a venue that screens both independent films and blockbusters. Local nonprofit MKE Film spearheaded a modernization effort to enhance the visitor experience without compromising the theater’s historic character. Key design interventions included improved lighting and acoustics, enhanced life safety and accessibility, and collaborations with local artisans to honor the building’s heritage.Likewise, immigrant visionaries 171 years ago known as the Milwaukee Turners joined together to stand up for justice. The structure they built, Turner Hall, includes Milwaukee’s oldest gymnasium, a restaurant, and a theater space. Today the 142-year-old theater offers wellness programming, nonpartisan workshops on civics, and incredible local and national talent coordinated by the Pabst Theater Group. Moderate walking.
