Description

Join project partners for a behind-the-scenes look at advocacy, funding models, and public-private partnerships at the Milwaukee Soldiers Home and the Mitchell Park Domes—both on America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list and both on the path to long-term preservation thanks to bold, innovative action. At the Milwaukee Soldiers Home, preservationists overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles through vision, teamwork, and tenacity. In 2021, as part of an Enhanced Use Lease with the Department of Veterans Affairs, six historic buildings on the VA Medical Center campus were restored to their original purpose: the service of veterans. The next phase will transform three more historic buildings into community space, a functioning theater venue, and supportive service offices. Meanwhile, advocacy for the Mitchell Park Domes has galvanized a movement to preserve these midcentury marvels of glass and steel. As Milwaukee County works toward a future plan for the Domes and Mitchell Park, explore how innovation, community engagement, and grassroots advocacy are driving a shared vision forward—one that centers both preservation and public benefit. Moderate walking. Forum Members: $60 / Regular: $80
