Encountering difficulties protecting places important to marginalized groups? Join this session to learn about the ongoing collaboration between the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) to preserve and reclaim former queer spaces in Milwaukee, WI. Visit seven nearby buildings in historic Walker’s Point, which were part of an architecture design studio, and examine the role of archival research in advocating for the preservation of buildings with marginalized histories. With peers, discuss the challenges and opportunities in preserving queer spaces within the framework of historic preservation standards as well as strategies for local community partnerships.
