Learn about the recovery of ancient dugout canoes in Lake Mendota, Wisconsin ranging back to 4,500 years ago. Caching, or the sinking of dugout canoes to store them during the winter, was a common practice in the past and such cached canoes have been found in other lakes and rivers throughout Wisconsin, with more than 100 documented to date. In this session, you'll learn how the discoveries in Lake Mendota have acted as a springboard for more canoe discoveries, throughout the state and region-wide.
