Explore the growing development pressures facing historic buildings in Wisconsin’s capital city and discover innovative preservation solutions, including infill development and public-private partnerships. Begin the day with a visit to the Wisconsin State Capitol to learn about its ongoing preservation efforts. Over lunch, hear preservation experts at CG Schmidt, a 120-year-old construction company, share highlights of their recent renovation projects. Then hear archaeologists explain how advanced technology is being used to locate and conserve ancient Native American canoes discovered in nearby lakes. Participants will have the opportunity to view one of these conserved canoes! Finally, learn how a new treatment is helping stabilize crumbling sandstone in a former synagogue built in 1863, and see how the adaptive reuse of the former Garver Feed Mill into restaurants and shops has sparked revitalization in the surrounding neighborhood. While there, enjoy a taste of local flavor with a scoop of Calliope Ice Cream, made right at Garver. Moderate walking. Forum Members: $75 / Regular: $95
