Bryan Block received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Louisiana State University in 1987. He began his practice of architecture in Durham, NC, working on the Gothic Revival buildings of Duke University. He returned to New Orleans in 1996 and worked as an independent architect restoring and renovating local high-style historic residential buildings, two of which he had designated as local historic landmarks.
Block received his Master of Preservation Studies from Tulane University in 2011 after which he joined the Historic District Landmarks Commissioner as a Building Plans Examiner, then Preservation Architect. He became Director of the Vieux Carré Commission in 2016. In 2020, he was named as Executive Director of the Historic Districts Landmarks Commission, as well.
