Archbishop Gregory Michael Aymond holds the unique distinction of being the first New Orleans native to serve as Archbishop of New Orleans in the church’s 216-year history. While at St. John Vianney Preparatory Seminary, Aymond served as professor, business administrator, and Rector. At Notre Dame Seminary, he served as professor, Director of Education, and President Rector (1986-2000), longer than any other rector in the seminary’s history. During his tenure, Notre Dame Seminary grew to become the third-largest seminary in the country. Under his tenure as Bishop of Austin, the Diocese of Austin experienced unprecedented expansion including opening San Juan Diego Catholic High School for students from low-income families and opening St. Dominic Savio Catholic High School. Archbishop Aymond was installed as Archbishop of New Orleans on August 20, 2009.
