Join Tulane University’s Interim Director of Historic Preservation and nationally known cemetery expert to learn lessons from preservation projects undertaken in the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, the oldest extant cemetery in New Orleans. Initially constructed as a temporary burial site, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 became a permanent burial site by Spanish royal decree in 1789.The field study consists of a 20-minute fast-paced walk through the French Quarter and approximately 90 minutes of conversation on-site about the site’s long history, it’s current state of restoration, as well as lessons learned through years of work preserving one historic cemetery.
