The campus is laid out in the Beaux Arts tradition, with a mix of classical, midcentury, and modern architecture and a significant cultural landscape featuring the “Avenue of the Oaks”. Pontchartrain Park is known as the “Black Mayberry” for the legacy of excellence that was incubated there, leading residents on to careers as world famous actors, musicians, politicians, scientists. The district was added to the National Register in 2020.

The ranch-style midcentury homes built between 1955 and 1961 are one of the first suburban-style subdivisions developed for African Americans in the segregated South. This field study will include lunch at the restaurant of the acclaimed Joseph M. Bartholomew Sr. Golf Course.
