Name
Heritage in Harmony: Preserving Musical Traditions
Date & Time
Tuesday, October 29, 2024, 4:15 PM - 5:00 PM
Description

Stories are the intangible wonders of the world, binding communities over distance and time. From generation to generation—often shared via foodways, oral history, and music—stories remind us of our cultural inheritance, establishing where we come from and why we are here. But how can we, as preservationists, help retain, share, and pass along storytelling traditions locally, regionally and from sea to shining sea?

Join journalist and writer Gwen Thompkins in an exploration of locally born musical traditions that have outlasted many artifacts and structures created by human hands and now belong to the world.

Hear prolific New Orleans drummer Herlin Riley, Jr. perform some of the traditions he learned as part of the musical Lastie family and how they influenced his work with Jon Harry Connick, Jr., Jon Batiste, Terrence Blanchard and many, many others.
