New Orleans is no stranger to balancing the needs of residents with the needs of the economy, especially when that economy is wholly dependent on tourism.
The French Quarter is the central hub of this economy, and with a residential population of under 3,500 inhabitants, and nearly 20 million annual visitors, that equals more than 5,500 tourists per resident in an area that is 0.67 square miles! That ratio far exceeds Venice, Barcelona, Amsterdam, you name it.
This tour will take you through the narrow streets of a quaint little 300-year-old neighborhood. You will learn about the careful preservation of vernacular architecture but also many of the challenges that the French Quarter is facing in its fourth century. In a post-pandemic world, cities are looking to manage tourism in a regenerative way, but sometimes that needle can only be moved incrementally.
This experience will explore the efforts of residents, businesses, community groups, and local government to safeguard one of America’s most unique neighborhoods, even when those interests are often at odds. This 2.5-mile walking tour will take approximately 2-hours, with water provided.
Attendees will receive a copy of Along the Banquette: French Quarter Buildings and their Stories, by Edith Elliott Long and illustrated by famed artist, Rolland Golden.
This Field Study requires walking several blocks between stops over a period of 2+ hours so please dress appropriately with comfortable shoes and rain gear as appropriate. Water will be provided if you forget your water bottle.
Pre-Registration is required to attend this session.
