This field session will be a hands-on investigation of the historic Gallier House designed by James Gallier Jr., and built in 1860. It will begin with a discussion of historic building assessment best practices followed by a brief history of the Gallier family home.

Session attendees will investigate the Gallier House site, its exterior and interior finishes, structure and building systems for material condition and historical integrity. Attendees will help to prepare and discuss findings and recommendations that can be given to the property owner. The Gallier House, is unique in American history, and the session topic is of continuing interest to architectural historians, historical architects, and especially owners and managers of historic properties.

How do you research and assess the historical significance and physical condition of a building and its site? What should you expect of the consultants you engage to assist you?

Participants travel by bus for a portion of the Field Study; however some brief walking will be required. Please dress appropriately with comfortable shoes and rain gear as appropriate. Water will be provided if you forget your water bottle.
