Description

As a visible expression of the New Orleanian culture of remembrance, cemeteries can serve as a history book of the city. Through their identity-forming power and the architecture itself, the achievements of our ancestors are reflected here in St. Louis Cemetery No. 2, a true microcosm of New Orleans culture and tradition.

A tour of the cemetery will shine a light on the burial traditions, the cultural bonds and division, and the artisans and musicians who built this city. Additionally, see demonstrations of the specialized traditional trades used in New Orleans cemeteries and beyond, while learning the unique history of New Orleans by visiting the studios of two master craftsmen.

The tour will include Andrews’s Welding and Blacksmith, the workshop of Darryl Reeves, Poree Plaster, the studio of Jeffrey M. Poree Sr., and block 3 of the St. Louis Cemetery No. 2, a traditionally black burial space where many notable artisans and jazz musicians were laid to rest. This cemetery also holds members of the Society of Craftsmen, a benevolent society for the burial of traditional trades practitioners. Additionally, master crafts practitioners will demonstrate their trades for participants.

Participants travel by bus for a portion of the Field Study; however some brief walking will be required. Please dress appropriately with comfortable shoes and rain gear as appropriate. Water will be provided if you forget your water bottle.

Your badge is your ticket and has your session/time/date printed on the back. Please confirm your date/time before checking in. Some field studies run multiple times, and your ticket is session specific.

Field studies will depart from the main doors of the Sheraton New Orleans on Canal Street. Check in at the field study table in the lobby at least 20 minutes before departure for bus assignments. It is imperative to be on time for field study departures. Buses will roll promptly at the time indicated on the schedule.
