Description

The Historic New Orleans Collection’s museum campus at 520 Royal Street is the first and only LEED Silver certified building in the city’s 306-year-old French Quarter. Opened in 2019, it was the culmination of the restoration of the circa 1816 Seignouret-Brulatour House and the construction of a new contemporary wing. This three-hour field study uses architect-led tours, case studies, and interactive discussions with THNOC leadership to explore how concerns about preservation, sustainability, and the visitor experience drove the conceptualization and execution of this preservation project that included the rare opportunity for new construction in the heart of the French Quarter.

Preservation and sustainability solutions ranged from the reuse of historic building materials to the incorporation of thoughtful flood resilience strategies. Older building techniques became newly relevant. Climate change also spurred new thinking about the incorporation of cisterns, the French Quarter’s traditional solution for stormwater storage in constrained urban sites. This project also serves as a case study for using tax credits to incentivize historic preservation, green building practices and sustainable, heritage tourism.
